The Top 30 Gods in Anime (2023 Edition)

Table of Contents (TL:DR)

Anime has a lot of deities, gods, and superior beings as a whole in many different franchises. But which are the best? Today you are going to find out.

1. Belldandy – Oh My Goddess!

Belldandy is the popular goddess protagonist of the anime Oh My Goddess!

Her name means “Norn of the Present” in old Nordic and she is both a powerful and beautiful young woman with a caring and innocent personality.

Keiichi summons her to grant him a wish to “be forever with a goddess by his side.”

2. Enel – One Piece

Enel is considered a God in Skypiea so we definitely can add him to the list.

The main antagonist of the Skypiea arc is the current user of the Goro Goro no Mi fruit, which allows him to control, create and transform himself into lightning.

And his ultimate goal was reaching “Fairy Vearth,” or simply, the moon.

3. Nagi – Kannagi

She is the main protagonist of this anime.

Nagi is a goddess of purification whose mission is to purify the world of impurities completely.

But because her sacred tree was cut down she was weakened a lot.

She states she has a split personality called Kannagi, who is way more serious and polite than Nagie herself.

4. Ryuk – Death Note

Maybe you don’t see him as a god.

But remember that he is a Shinigami, literally a god of death.

Just because he doesn’t look like a god, it doesn’t mean he is not a god.

Ryuk is the reason why Death Note began.

He was just bored and dropped a Death Note to the real world to cure his boredom and see who would find it and what he would do with it.

5. Satan – Blue Exorcist

Well, Satan is the devil itself, the god of Gehenna if you think about it so I think we can add him to the list.

Satan is obviously the most powerful demon in existence, and the main reason why he hasn’t conquered the world yet in this story is that no human can host him without dying.

He is the main antagonist and the father of both Yukio and Rin.

6. Holo – Spice and Wolf

Holo is a wolf deity who comes from a place known as Yoitsu, a place that looks like Hyperborea, located in the far northern part of the known world.

Her true form is that of a large wolf, but to look normal, she chose the form of a 15-year-old girl.

She decided to travel with Lawrence after the people from Pasloe regarded her as unnecessary.

7. Nanami Momozono – Kamisama Kiss

Nanami started as a normal girl who became homeless after his father abandoned her, and after that, she becomes a god.

It happens quite often, right?

After saving a person from being attacked by a dog, this mysterious person is Mikage, a god who in gratitude gives her the land god mark on her, making her a goddess.

8. Father – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

To be fair, Father is not a God.

He is both the oldest and the original Homunculus created from the essence of the Eye of God mixed with Hohenheim’s blood.

But after absorbing the entity behind “The Gate”, he becomes more powerful than ever and proclaims that he has now “the power of god.”

This transformation after absorbing this entity is also known as “Father God Mode.”

9. Aqua – KonoSuba

I think she is the most useless goddess you have ever known.

Aqua is the goddess of water.

She is an inattentive and energetic girl who likes to receive reverence from her followers.

But in reality, she is a crybaby who gets mad very easily.

Despite her high magic stats, she has low intelligence and luck and spends her skills points on party tricks.

10. God – Platinum End

Tsugumi Ohba, the same person who wrote Death Note, created Platinum End.

So it was obvious that god would appear here too.

Here in this anime, the god is the winner of a “battle royale” between god candidates.

And when his/her energy starts running out, he must create another battle royale to select a new god and change the current one.

11. Hestia – Danmachi

Hestia is one of the lead characters of the Danmachi anime.

She is a goddess and the head of the Hestia Familia.

Hestia is a very energetic and cute girl who is passionate about her feelings and is always kind to others.

She is in love with Bell Cranel and is very possessive of him.

Hestia hates when another girl puts her eyes on Bell.

12. Apollo – Saint Seiya

Athena’s brother and God of the Sun, Apollo is the main antagonist of the enigmatic 2004 Saint Seiya film named “Heaven Chapter: Overture.”

Many regard Apollo as the most powerful deity ever presented in Saint Seiya.

He is beautiful, titanic, and capable of making Athena and Artemis panic with his presence.

13. Beerus – Dragon Ball Super

Beerus is the God of Destruction of Universe 7 with the nickname “Beerus the Destroyer.”

He is the main antagonist in the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie.

But after that, he becomes a supporting character in later sagas.

He is one of the most powerful entities in the Dragon Ball universe.

14. Veldanava – TenSura

This is the first True Dragon, father of Milim Nava, brother of Veldora Tempest, and the God that created the world of TenSura.

Many also know him as “Star King Dragon.”

He is practically the creator of the TenSura universe. Without him, nothing would have existed.

He transferred all of his powers to Milim when his wife was pregnant with her.

15. Shinigami – Soul Eater

It is funny to know that Shinigami was created by Shinra from Fire Force…

A human created a god.

He is known as Death, Shinigami, or simply, God.

Shinigami is both the reaper and the headmaster of Death Weapon Meister Academy.

He is also the father of both Asura and Death the Kid. He is not a bad guy, to be honest.

16. Haruhi Suzumiya – The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi is a barely normal high school girl.

She is the creator of the SOS Brigade, a school group dedicated to uncovering supernatural events around the school.

But she is unaware that she has God-like abilities.

She can change, reshape, and destroy reality according to her desires.

So, in Haruhi’s world, she is essentially a god.

17. Aizen – Bleach

Becoming a God was his plan all along.

Aizen planned absolutely everything that happened in Bleach.

After Aizen betrayed the Soul Society and almost single-handedly wiped out the entire human race to usurp the Soul King, Aizen achieved Godhood.

The sad thing is that after this, he was sealed by Urahara.

18. Kars – Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures Part 2: Battle Tendency

Kars is the reason why Jojo’s exists.

Why? Because he created both the stone masks and the vampires.

While also the leader of the Pillar Men, his main goal was transforming himself into “The Perfect Lifeform,” a God, in other words.

While being able to transform into anything and adapt to any situation, he was outsmarted by our very own Joseph Joestar.

19. Yukiteru Amano – Future Diary

While Yuki is just a normal boy, he must participate in the battle royale created by Deus Ex Machina, and if he wins, he becomes God.

While being God, he falls into a deep depression and mourns his stalker Yuno for the next 10.000 years after she kills herself and lets Yuki win the tournament.

20. Lain Iwakura – Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments Lain is one of the hardest anime to follow because of its complicated and dark atmosphere and themes, but it is a masterpiece.

Lain is a girl who, as the story goes on, transforms herself into a Goddess and begins to throw away her humanity piece by piece.

She is not your traditional kind of Goddess.

21. Madoka Kaname – Madoka Magica

Madoka Magica changed everything and presented a critically acclaimed storyline.

At the end of the series, Madoka finally wishes to become a magical girl, but something goes “wrong,” and she becomes a Goddess instead.

Then she rewrites history and loses her physical form, and almost everybody forgets her existence.

22. Arceus – Pokemon

In Pokémon exists normal Pokemons, rare Pokemons, mythical Pokemons, and then, there is Arceus.

Arceus is known as the creator of the Pokemon world with its 1000 arms and the first one ever to exist.

He can control time and is immortal.

It’s said that Arceus was born before the universe.

23. The Winged Dragon of Ra – Yu-Gi-Oh!

Between the three divine cards: Obelisk the Tormentor, Slifer the Sky Dragon, and The Winged Dragon of Ra, the last one is considered the strongest one.

It is obvious that this dragon is considered a God, and even it was said that both Obelisk and Slifer couldn’t beat The Winged Dragon, so that is another reason why it is part of the list.

24. God – One-Punch Man

I know what you are thinking, and no, I’m not talking about Saitama himself.

God is another character in this manga.

Despite not appearing in the anime yet, he will appear, and when he does, I’m sure the internet will break.

This God doesn’t like humans and is more than capable of both granting and erasing powers and manipulating dimensions.

25. Zeus – Record of Ragnarok

Zeus is one of the many gods that appear in this anime.

Both the ruler and the god of the skies, Zeus is the one who fought with Adam, the first Human.

The Greek Pantheon leader and often referred to as “the Godfather of the Cosmos,” Zeus is one of the strongest characters in the anime.

In fact, many consider him the strongest god in existence.

26. The Truth – Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

The Truth in FMA Brotherhood is everything: the world, the universe, you, me, God…

It is a crueler and more abstract version of God and is not even worshipped.

So because of that, not many see him as god.

It is omnipotent and its main “goal” is both to punish the unjust and to uphold the law of equivalent exchange.

27. Hades – Saint Seiya

Hades is the antagonist of one of the best anime sagas ever made.

As the king of the underworld, he is reborn every 243 years to start his rebellion against Athena and conquer the world.

He is one of the most powerful deities ever presented in the Saint Seiya universe and has absolute control over the underworld.

28. Yato – Noragami

Also known as Yaboku. Yato is a stray God who wishes to become a God of Fortune but before this, he used to be a God of Calamity.

Yato physically looks like an attractive young man in his 20s with a height of 173cm.

He is both crude, mischievous and childish but despite this he can be serious, determined and friendly.

29. Deus Ex Machina – Future Diary

If you live in a world of Future Diary, then this guy would be your worst enemy.

Deus Ex Machina is the battle royale’s creator and the god of both time and space.

He is omnipotent, so he can do whatever he wants when he wants.

He has a very cruel personality; everything is just a game to him.

30. Zeno – Dragon Ball Super

At some point, Goku will outpower anyone in Dragon Ball Super, except maybe this guy.

Zeno is the strongest character ever presented in Dragon Ball and the supreme leader of the Multiverse.

Despite his childish appearance and personality, Zeno’s mere presence terrifies everybody, and he singlehandedly destroyed six universes after getting angry.
