The best romance. I’ll do you one better: Romantic comedy! Nope! Better! Romantic comedy anime!
The best kind of love stories are the ones that make you laugh, and these anime romantic comedies do just that. Not all of us like our romances filled with nothing but heartwarming moments and soft orchestra music; sometimes, we need a bit more humour or something looney to provide some comic relief (even if it is at someone else’s expense). Some people might not be fans of any type because they find them too clichéd, but I think those who don’t mind will agree there aren’t many other genres around nowadays where relationships actually work out in the end.
One of my favorite things about this genre is that it allows you to explore the many facets of love, friendships, and memories. Along your journey, there may be comical misunderstandings or unexpected situations, but these are what make rom-com one of the most loved anime genres!
We compiled a list of anime recommendations for the best rom-com anime out there.

23. The World God Only Knows
The nerdy character Keima Katsuragi is what makes this rom-com anime so funny. He’s known on the internet as being very good at interacting with 2D girls, but in real life, he can’t seem to find a girlfriend- that was until one day when the Hell suddenly came knocking and enlisted his help! I wonder how things will turn out? With a unique story, crisp art style, and colorful characters, this is a nice rom com anime to watch.
22. I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying
Every rom com anime has the same trope of a high school romance. Except for this one! The characters are already married by the time they meet, and their chemistry is anything but cheesy. You also get to learn more about them as people, which lets you connect on an even deeper level with two fictional beings that feel increasingly real over time.
21. Ojisan and Marshmallow
This rom com anime follows a man in his late thirties, Habahiro Hige. He loves Tabekko marshmallows, and Lori Wakabayashi knows this! She teases him by eating them right before he can get to them or buying all of the ones at the store. Her friends are confused as to why she is teasing someone so much older than her, but it turns out that they actually have more chemistry than originally expected because Lori has feelings for Habahiro too!
This anime focuses on Ryuuji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka, who are both in love with their best friends. They work together to try and figure out their feelings, all while denying the truth about how they feel. This is a comedy that will leave you questioning your own relationship status at any given time because of the interesting dynamic between these two characters!

19. Lovely Complex
Lovely Complex has one of the cutest rom com anime story and amazing character design. You won’t find another show that matches up to this one! The story follows Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani; these two start as best friends who are often teased because they’re at the end of all their friend’s jokes due to their height difference which makes them great comedy duo. Although they don’t really get along well with each other but decide to help each other catch a date.
18. Ouran High School Host Club
One day Haruhi Fujioka, a high school student at Ouran Academy in Japan, walks into an abandoned music room. The room was not so abandoned as it was filled with male students who entertain different females by providing snacks and drinks to them. She ends up breaking an expensive vase in their possession, and the group enlists her as their errand boy.
However, they soon discover that Haruhi has been mistaken for being biologically male when she becomes very popular among female customers after briefly hosting on stage once or twice. This bright student becomes a staple member of the Ouran High School Host Club and spends most of her school life as such. It’s quite quirky, fun – though not completely lighthearted- but it does have its moments where you’ll be laughing at what happens next!
17. Itazura Na Kiss
Itazura Na Kiss is such a sweet anime. It follows Kotoko Aihara, who has had her heart broken many times before because of her klutziness and clumsiness. She has feelings for Naoki Irie, but they are not reciprocated. When an earthquake destroys her house, Kotoko takes this opportunity to stay with Naoki’s family until they are rebuilt and get closer than ever before! You won’t want anything but happiness for these two cuties after this cute romance unfolds on screen.
Hasegawa Kodaka has just moved schools. Nobody really wants to be his friend because he looks like a delinquent. What makes this anime so different from other rom coms? His classmate, the cute girl, Yozora, who is easily angered by him, spent her school days talking to her imaginary friends, and they decide that the two of them should start their own club with people who don’t have any friends either! He soon finds himself surrounded by friendless girls in the club that provide that occasional ecchi moment.
15. My Little Monster
Shizuku is kind of cold-blooded high school girl, but she’s not a total ice queen, setting this rom com anime apart from the rest. She gets another job delivering handouts to Haru. Haru’s innocent nature shocks Shizuku, who can’t believe someone so pure still exists. Her surprise is short-lived, though, as she quickly gets caught up in his world of purity and innocence to the point where it starts to consume her mind.
14. Fruits Basket
After her mother’s tragic death, high school student Tooru honda lives in the forest on her own. Yuki Souma and his cousin offer Tooru their home because they know how much she has lost. Although the death of a parent is always difficult to deal with, it’s interesting that this anime focuses not only on mourning but also on moving forward while managing your emotions at all times (even after the tragedy). The lightheartedness and mysticalness surrounding an ancient family secret about people you are living with really develop this series as new discoveries come out unexpectedly, which makes for some entertaining episodes!

“Oregairu” is one of the best rom com anime because it manages to be both hilarious and heartwarming at once. Hikigaya Hachiman, a student in high school who doesn’t know what he wants or why slowly opens up his life as he spends time with other students outside of school during this club’s activities. One thing that makes “Oregairu” so perfect is its characters: they’re human-like enough for viewers to relate, but complex enough not to fall into cliche traps like all too many slice-of-life anime series do often end up doing.
The comedy in this anime is truly extraordinary. Raku Ichijou, the protagonist of our story, looks like a normal guy, but he made a promise to his childhood friend that when they reunited as adults, they would get married. This makes for some really unique and interesting development between the two characters because their families are on opposing sides and don’t know it yet! When Raku loses something important one day at school, Chitoge helps him look for it, which leads them to become rivals without realizing until later what exactly happened.
11. Golden Time
Banri Tada is lost at a law school in Tokyo, and he just so happens to bump into another law school freshman. They instantly become friends as they make it to their destination together. Once they get there, before them stands this beautiful girl with roses.
10. Special A
The protagonist Hikari Hanazono is a girl with an insatiable thirst for competition. She’s always looking to best Kei Takishima, but he never seems to take her seriously – so she enrolls at all of the same schools as him in order to beat him out on grades and sports events. But when will their rivalry come to a head? And who will be left standing after they go head-to-head?!
Clannad follows the adventures of Okazaki Tomoya, a troubled student who is not excitable. One day he meets Furukawa Nagisa, and they have an interesting interaction because she shouts things to make herself more excited about it and her shouting makes him want to laugh at first but then when he figures out why she does that, his attitude changes completely towards her.

8. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You
Kimi ni Todoke, while also a rom-com with the same classic tropes that many other shows follow, has one major difference. It follows a high school girl Kuronuma Sawako’s journey to make friends and not be seen as “mean.” And, the most popular boy in school takes an interest in her. The show offers an interesting take on how some people are viewed in society because of their shyness and personality traits.
This sweet anime series features a cute art style also a very sweet rom com anime about making friends!
7. Honey and Clover
This romantic comedy anime will pull at your heartstrings but is also uplifting and comical. The character development in this show is heavy with Takemoto Yuuta, Mayama Takumi, and Morita Shinobu as broken college students all living under one roof. 5. Kaichou Maid Sama
Kaichou Wa Maid Sama follows Student council president Misaki Ayuzawa: on a mission to make the school more geared towards the newly included girls. But Misaki is harboring a secret: in order to support her family, she works part-time as a maid in a maid cafe, and Takumi Usui finds out about it. What follows is a series of misunderstandings and mishaps that gives us the best comic moments Kaichou Wa Maid Sama could offer.
4. Kamisama Kiss
Kamisama Kiss is a lighthearted, cute rom com anime that follows Nanami Momozono, who has just been kicked out of her house due to her father’s gambling addiction. It was at the local park when she meets Mikage, and he invites her back home with him where they find out that his place of residence is, in fact, an old shrine. He soon takes up the role of guardian for this newly homeless girl by trying to make it, so she becomes a deity herself!
3. Ore Monogatari!!: My Love Story
Takeo Goda has never had good luck with women, but that all changed when he saved the lovely Rinko Yamato. After rescuing her from being hit by a car on his bike, Takeo found himself completely smitten and unable to stop thinking about this woman who was so different than him- she’s tiny yet strong while he is tall and muscular; in contrast, they are opposites. The one thing these two share? A rare sense of humor that brings out their best qualities!
2. Tari Tari
This is a very lighthearted and easy-going rom com anime that will make you get really invested in the characters. The story focuses on five different high school students who are starting to grasp what it means to be young adults as they navigate through their first love, friendships, jobs, hobbies – all of which come with some drama along the way. Music is something that ties all of them together in this series, whether it’s fuelling up for an audition or just sitting down quietly listening while trying not to cry about whatever has been happening lately; music can heal wounds better than anything else!
1. Tsuredure Children
Tsuredure Children is a very relatable rom com anime. This entertaining series follows the stories of several couples and how they came to fall in love with each other and experience some stories together, like when Yuki’s dad tried to get her into dating games or when Takano had an awkward dinner date where he met his girlfriend-to-be for the first time. What keeps this funny show interesting are all these unlikely moments that make us laugh but also have emotional parts too – one moment Takuya has been waiting for ages for might not go as planned at all!
If you like cute romances, then this list is for you! This was a hard one to narrow down because there are so many great anime out there. I hope that we’ve helped find the perfect show and if not, let us know in the comments what your favorite romance anime series is. And don’t forget to share with your friends on social media too!
