Overlord

Albedo fanart drawing

Overlord is way better than you might expect.

it has a captivating dark fantasy setting, great characters, is realistic, and both the animation and sounds effects are top-notch.

Both Overlord and Redo of Healer share many similarities.

Overlord is an isekai anime about a gamer called Satoru Suzuki who gets trapped inside his favorite multiplayer online video game called YGGDRASIL the same day it was scheduled to shut down.

He reappears inside YGGDRASIL as Momonga, overlord of the Great Tomb of Nazarick and leader of the guild called Aniz Ooal Gown, the most powerful mage around.

The anime adaptation has been globally well received, including MMORPG gamers, because they feel the anime perfectly expresses the dark fantasy genre.

Overlord is usually considered one of the best anime of the last ten years.

Plus, it has four seasons, so you have a lot to watch.

Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World

Rutina fanart

When we talk about anime with adult themes, this anime is one of those few that can rival Redo of Healer without being openly referred to and labeled as an explicit x-rated anime.

This anime tells the story of Michio, an asocial teenager who, one day, after accessing a mysterious website, gets transported to another world as the avatar he created.

He also has the ability to make any woman fall in love with him.

If you like adult themes in your anime, you will love Harem in the Labyrinth because 75% of this anime is adult.

It follows a simple pattern: adult scene, fights inside the dungeon, adult scene, fights inside the dungeon, and so on.

I am currently reading the manga, and let me tell you, they animated pretty well the adult scenes in the anime.

Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World

Emilia fanart

This is another isekai anime on the list.

But this time, we are talking about possibly the most famous isekai anime after Sword Art Online.

While it does not have the same craziness, darkness, and adult themes as Redo of Healer, Re:Zero can go from happy to tragic in a matter of seconds.

It has ogres, witches, flying cats, and killer rabbits.

Re:Zero tells the story of Subaru Natsuki, a NEET who, out of nowhere, gets transported to another world while returning home from a convenience store.

There he meets Emilia, and later finds out that he has an ability that sends him back in time every time he dies.

Then, he promises Emilia to protect and support her and help her become the next queen of the Kingdom of Lugunica.

This is a very polarizing anime.

And Re:Zero is an anime that every anime fan must watch sooner or later.

GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought Hete!

Gate-min

Imagine that you are casually walking in your city and suddenly a Roman-styled portal to another world appears!

From that portal, a bunch of monsters and soldiers emerge and start attacking the city and killing everybody.

That is GATE.

I can’t give a better explanation than that.

Yoji Itame is a Japan Self-Defense Forces officer who, with his team, is sent to investigate and start some negotiations in the other world.

Japan calls this other world, “the Special Region.”

Inside that world, magic exists as well as dragons, witches, and elves.

Yoji and his team start helping some people including the princess Piña Co Lada (what a stupid name) and the elf Tuka Luna Marceau.

They also befriend the sorcerer Lelei La Lelena, the demigoddess Rory Mercury, and dark elf Yao Haa Dushi.

With corruption, fantasy, fights, and merging two different time periods, this anime has everything.

Made in Abyss

Riko fanart

This anime has some of the best world-building out there.

In fact, I think Made in Abyss is a masterpiece, a trauma-filled, depressing masterpiece.

While it does not have adult romance themes, it has a dark atmosphere that grows with each episode you watch.

Riko is an orphaned girl who lives in the town of Orth, a town that surrounds a massive and strange hole descending deep into the earth.

Everyone calls it “The Abyss.”

Inside the Abyss are remnants of past civilizations, unknown animals and flora, and mysterious artifacts.

It is also a popular hunting spot for those living in Orth.

The thing with the Abyss is that descending is not the problem.

The damnation comes when you are ascending from the Abyss because the “Curse of the Abyss” can be manifested.

The deeper you go, the more dangerous the sequels are.

The Cave Raiders are usually the ones who go to the Abyss.

And Riko, an apprentice of Cave Riders, wants to descend to the lowest point in the Abyss and find her mom, a legendary Cave Raider called Lyza who is presumed dead.

Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons

Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi fanart

I think of this as the long lost son of Code Geass, Muv Luv Alternative, and Highschool DxD.

Cross Ange, like Redo of Healer, and The Rising of the Shield Hero, uses revenge as the main purpose of the protagonist.

In this story, the protagonist is a dethroned princess.

Cross Ange is set in a world where both war and pollution have disappeared because of a new technology called “Mana.”

But with a new solution, a new problem appears those who cannot use Mana, called “Norma,” live in oppression.

The princess of the Empire, Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi proposed the idea of exterminating the Norma, but her brother reveals she has been a Normal all along.

She is then exiled to a military base where Norma fight dragons against their will.

In short, same motivations, different anime.

If you like dragons and this summary piqued your interest, then you will probably enjoy this anime.

Vinland Saga

Helga fanart

Oh yes, this is one of the best anime ever made.

Seriously, Vinland Saga is amazing.

It’s the best anime about Vikings you can find.

Thorfinn is the son of Thors, an extremely powerful Jomsviking general who retires to live a secret peaceful life with his family.

After being discovered and later forced to return to the battlefield, Thors is betrayed by his former comrade Floki and killed by Askeladd, a Viking.

Then, Thorfinn grows and becomes a warrior in Askeladd’s squad despite swearing to kill him for killing his father.

He inherited almost inhuman physical talents from his father, but despite that, is not a good fighter at the beginning of history.

With war, battles, violence, and betrayal, Vinland Saga is one of those very rare cases where the anime adaptation is superior to the manga.

Btooom!

Himiko fanart

2012’s Btooom! is something like an isekai/battle royale/survival anime.

While it does not have the same mature qualities or a plot as disturbing as Redo of Healer, both anime share some things in common.

For instance, they both feature fights, action sequences, and an antagonist with a personality type similar to Keyaruga’s from Redo of Healer.

This anime follows an unemployed man called Sakamoto Ryota who is invited to participate in the real-life version of the video game he always plays.

There he meets his in-game wife, Himiko, who, just like Ryota, was invited to participate.

The two of them must survive and find a way home.

While it is not an innovative anime, Btoom! received good reviews from both anime fans and critics.

Plus, the opening theme, “No Pain, No Game” by Nano is considered one of the best anime openings of all time.

Grandblue Fantasy: The Animation

Granblue Fantasy and Redo of Healer are anime with two similar characteristics.

First, they are both set in a fantasy world.

And they both feature beautiful waifus.

Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is set in a world where islands drift in the skies.

This is where our protagonist called Gran and his talking flying lizard Vyrn live.

Suddenly one day, he comes across Lyria, a girl who escaped from the Erste Empire, a government that wants to rule this world.

Then, the two of them escape with Vyrn with a letter written by Gran’s father that says: “I will wait for you at Estalucia – Island of Stars.”

Despite having both battles and fights, Granblue Fantasy is wayyy more lighthearted than Redo of Healer…

Of course, it is pretty easy to be more lighthearted than Redo of Healer.

Also, Granblue Fantasy’s animation is top-notch.

The Qwaser of Stigma

Tomo fanart

This is perhaps the only anime, along with “Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World,” that can rival Redo of Healer’s mature romantic themes.

Before those two were released, no anime had more adult romantic content than The Qwaser of Stigmata. This anime is set in an Eastern Orthodox school called “Saint Mihailov Academy” where rumors of a serial killer who attacks girls at the academy are spreading.

After the academy’s headmaster disappears, his daughter called Tomo, and her sister Mafuyu go back home where they find an injured silver-haired boy called Alexander “Sasha” Nikolaevich Hell.

Sasha is a qwaser, a being who can manipulate elements through Soma.

And the only way Qwasers can receive Soma is through the act of breastfeeding.

Sasha then befriends both Tomo and Mafuyu, and he starts protecting them from other evil Qwasers.

Future Diary

Yuno Gasai fanart

Future Diary is probably the best serious entry anime you could watch.

With mature romantic themes, bullying, death, tragedy, terrorism, gods, and love; this anime has everything.

It starts like your generic anime with a generic protagonist.

But everything changes after the first three episodes.

Future Diary is a ride you will never forget.

The plot depicts a battle royale created by God called “Diary Game” where 12 people participate in it, and the last survivor will become the new God.

The protagonist is Yukiteru “Yuki” Amano, a 14-year-old boy who spends his time daydreaming.

His only friends are Deus and his assistant Muru Muru.

Deus then forces him to participate in this battle royale.

His cellphone is transformed into a Diary capable of predicting the future, and begins being stalked and protected by a girl called Yuno Gasai.

By the way, this anime popularized the term “yandere.”

Future Diary is a ride you will never forget.

The Dark Massacre of the Vengeful Hero

Princess Victoria fanart

This is the first manga on this list.

The Dark Massacre of the Vengeful Hero is almost the twin brother of Redo of Healer because they are very similar in almost every aspect.

It contains gore, mature intimacy, torture, vengeance, sadistic villains, even more sadistic “heroes”, and so much more.

After defeating the Demon Lord, the hero Raul Evans is betrayed by everyone and is later tortured and killed.

But then, he is given a chance at life with even more power to carry out his desire for vengeance and to kill everyone who betrayed him.

This is another vengeance-driven story but way more graphic and violent than Redo of Healer with a lot of dark humor.

I’ve been reading this manga for some time and it is really interesting.

It is something new for me, and I’m enjoying it.

I doubt this manga will get an anime adaptation, but you never know.

The Death Mage Doesn’t Want a Fourth Time

Bellmond fanart

Let me present you with the first light novel on this list and also one of the best dark fantasy light novels out there.

This light novel tells the story of Amamiya Hiroto, an unlucky young man plagued with misfortunes who dies after trying to save a random girl.

After dying, he meets a god who helps him to reincarnate into an even worst life, and sadly he dies again.

Upon meeting this god, he is informed that another reincarnation was set in motion, and guess what?

He dies again.

Then after dying a second time, the same god curses him before Hiroto is reborn to have him die again.

Now a dhampir, a half-vampire half-dark elf, Hiroto is determined to not die, to live this third life with the only things he has: near unlimited Mana and Death Magic.

This one has death, non-consensual intimacy, dark fantasy, and a good protagonist.

In short, I think you will enjoy this light novel a lot.

The Hero Laughs While Walking the Path of Vengeance a Second Time

Alesia AUROLLREA fanart

This manga looks more like a reworked version of The Dark Massacre of the Vengeful Hero.

But it does not matter.

Both of them are very similar to Redo of Healer, so this one can make it to the list.

The hero Ukei Kaito fought endlessly to fulfill his role, but after killing the Demon Lord and saving the world, he is betrayed by those he called his friends.

As he is dying, he swears to enact the most brutal revenge imaginable if he is given a second chance.

And suddenly, the time begins to rewind to the time he was summoned to this world.

And with this, the “hero” starts the most brutal and deserved vengeance.

It’s an intensely violent and highly enjoyable series if you like revenge stories.

Dungeon Seeker

Katerina fanart

This is another manga with a protagonist seeking revenge against those who bullied him.

Junpei Takeda is a normal school boy who daily suffers at the hands of his bully Kido Shouta.

And his friends, but usually Junpei’s childhood friend Noriko Tatsumiya come to save him.

One day from out of nowhere, they are transported to another world.

Junpei in this world is just as weak as he was in their original world, but there is something different now; he has a powerful ability that allows him to learn the skills from those he defeats.

After some time, both Kido and Noriko (betraying him) trick Junpei into entering a dungeon with a monster that is almost impossible to escape.

Now driven by vengeance, Junpei tries to find an exit while killing every monster he encounters to become stronger to kill both Kido and Noriko.

The Tale of Revenge of Hero on his Second Coming – Fall into Despair, resign as a Hero and Allied with the Former Demon Queen

Lucifina Fanart

That is a really long manga title.

So, at this point on the list, we are talking a lot about revenge-driven stories.

Of course, that is Redo of Healer’s main plot: revenge or vengeance.

The other adult themes only complement it.

Hero’s Second Coming (let’s just call it that) is about a high school student called Amatsuki Iori who is summoned into another world to become its hero.

But sadly, he is later betrayed by his companions and killed.

Nevertheless, he is summoned again and recognizes one of his killers swearing to kill him.

Now, Iori starts to plan his revenge accompanied by the Demon Lord itself, Elfiszaaku Gildegard.

Vengeance-driven stories are typically violent and graphic.

But this manga is less violent than the previous ones.

It has both comedic and lighthearted tones in some parts, but the battles and deaths are still in there.

The Executed Sage who was Reincarnated as a Lich and Starts an All-Out War

Claire Barton

The title says it all, right? The plot of this manga begins when the Sage Dwight, along with the hero, subjugated and defeated the Demon Lord (always the demon lord).

After returning home and bringing peace to the world, they were betrayed and left for dead at the valley of the dead because there were suspected of becoming the new Demon Lord.

Ten years passed, and Dwight quietly survived, becoming a living skeleton.

With a lot of determination and anger, he ate the Miasma of the Valley of the Dead, becoming an existence more powerful than the previous Demon Lord.

and decided to go to the surface with tons of undead with him to begin a war against humanity.

Skill Taker’s World Domination: Building a Slave Harem from Scratch

Aina fanart

Let’s stop right here with the revenge-driven stories and go back to the mature romance-themed mangas.

This one right here is called “Skill Taker’s World Domination: Building a Slave Harem from Scratch,” and the plot is exactly that; about building a harem.

Konoe Yuuto is a martial artist who is transported to another world where the slave-trade is legal.

Yuuto, wanting to create a harem, starts stealing the skills from monsters he defeats with this “Skill Taker” ability to create his harem and live a careless life…

This anime has comedy, harem, fantasy, magic, and of course, beautiful waifus.

It’s a great manga to read after finishing something dark, so I hope you enjoy this one.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Without trying to be funny or elitist, I think Code Geass is, and forever will be, the BEST anime ever made. Period.

If you go and search the definition of the word “perfection,” an image of Code Geass will appear.

It’s as simple as that.

It has top-notch characters, plot, animation, battles, plot twists, and THE best final episode you can imagine.

Everything about Code Geass is perfect.

It’s set in an alternative timeline.

Britannia’s prince Lelouch vi Britannia is exiled by his father with his sister to Japan after their mother’s assassination and used as political tools.

Now under the name of Lelouch Lamperouge, he accidentally boards a truck with a witch named C.C. who gives him the “Power of the King,” the Geass power.

The Power of the King allows him to command any person to do what he wants with absolute obedience.

With this new power and C.C. alongside him, Lelouch begins his plan to destroy Britannia, find his mother’s killers, and create a better world for his sister Nunnally.

Believe me, you won’t find a better vengeance story than this one.

Black Dog

Kaya Irimi fanart

If you were expecting a normal anime, this one.

Yeah, that’s it.

Universally known as “Kuroinu,” Black Dog is probably one of the most known explicit anime ever created and a classic of the genre.

It is set in a fantasy world where elves, orcs, magic, kingdoms, and castles exist, and a war has begun between humans and dark elves.

But a third party composed of orcs and human soldiers joins the war and plans to reign over the humans and the dark elves.

That third party begins to win the war, and you can guess what happens next.

Due to Redo of Healer being borderline explicit, I thought I’d finish the list with an explicit anime.

Well, that’s it for our list of anime and manga like Redo of Healer.

We hope you enjoyed it and found some new favorites to watch and read.

Be sure to let us know in the comments what controversial anime series we missed and why they should have been included.
